The state of California is located on the West Coast of the United States. It is the most populous state in the Union, as well as the third largest in terms of land, behind Alaska and Texas. The second-lowest point in the Western Hemisphere is in Death Valley National Park, at Badwater Basin, which is 282 feet below sea level. Yosemite National Park is located in the eastern portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera Counties in east/central California. The park is made up of 761,268 acres and almost four million people visit the park every year. This park is internationally known for its granite cliffs, waterfalls and Giant Sequoia groves (totaling almost 250 trees). Yosemite National Park was inherently important in the development of national parks in the United States, thanks to the efforts of early conservationist, John Muir.

The state has more major professional sports teams than any other, totaling 19. The metro San Francisco area, which encompasses San Jose and Oakland, is home to seven Major League teams and Los Angeles is home to ten. San Diego is home to two and Sacramento home to one. The oldest college bowl game in the nation, the annual Rose Bowl, is held in Pasadena, near Los Angeles. In 1960, California hosted the Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley Resort, near Lake Tahoe. In 1932 and again in 1984, the Summer Olympic games were held in Los Angeles. In 1994, Los Angeles hosted the FIFA World Cup. Auto racing is a prominent sport in the state, particularly in metro Los Angeles. Long Beach hosts the IRL IndyCar Series downtown. Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, hosts NASCAR races.
